We are a library that indexes call nos. from both bib & item. This comes in handy for titles where some copies have a different call no. than another copy. For example the copy in Archives has a different call no. than the circulating copy. This way one call no. can be in the bib record, and the copy with the different no. would have its unique call no. in the item record.
The both (bib./item) indexing is often used in libraries who are part of consortiums, have multiple branch locations, etc.
