CATALOGER, USM Library
The University of Southern Maine Library seeks a Cataloger. This
professional librarian conducts original and complex copy cataloging for
materials in various assigned formats and languages acquired for USM's
general collections located in library facilities on three separate campuses.
Assigns and supervises the editing of copy cataloging and oversees control
of quality in the production of bibliographic records. Maintains USMARC
bibliographic and authority control using OCLC in a multi-campus
Innovative Interfaces Inc. integrated library system. Assists in evaluating,
planning, and implementing strategies to meet the library's future cataloging
needs, and in developing and recommending procedures for evolving
formats, especially electronic/cyber/digital.
Required qualifications include: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent; 2
years of recent successful cataloging experience using OCLC and an
integrated online library system, preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc.;
understanding and experience with AACR2R, USMARC formats and
Library of Congress rule interpretations, practices, and standards in
creating bibliographic records, including LC subject headings and
classification schemes; experience with library database maintenance and
authority control; strong computer skills, including experience with
personal computers and standard office productivity software programs, in
a networked environment.
Preferred: cataloging experience in a networked academic environment;
knowledge of one or more European languages; successful supervisory
experience; experience organizing electronic or digitized information
resources for retrieval, including SGML or other text-encoding systems;
knowledge and/or interest in emerging metadata standards and services;
familiarity with music cataloging.
