HEAD, MONOGRAPH CATALOGING

This position was previously advertised as Head, Original and Special Materials Cataloging.

The Libraries of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) invite applications for the position of Head, Monograph Cataloging Section in the Catalog Department.

Duties And Responsibilities

Serves as Head of the Monograph Cataloging Section, providing leadership, management, supervision and evaluation of 7 FTE staff.  Supervises the section staff in  the original and complex copy-cataloging of monographs in all formats including videos, maps, microforms, dissertations and electronic resources.

Provides leadership in the organization of information, stimulating debate and advising on directions and goals.  Investigates, experiments with, and implements new approaches for creating and manipulating bibliographic and authority data.

Trains catalogers in all aspects of cataloging, including descriptive cataloging, subject analysis and classification; acts as final authority in monographic cataloging questions. Monitors trends and maintains currency in emerging issues in bibliographic control, information organization, knowledge management, and metadata standards.  Provides leadership for authority control for the UCI Libraries, including evaluating software and advising on projects.

Performs original cataloging (in an area or areas to be determined in consultation with the individual selected).  Shares responsibility in Catalog Department management as a member of the Catalog Management Team.  Provides leadership in developing local cataloging policy and procedures.  Participates in library committees, task forces, and special projects, particularly those related to cataloging, metadata, and bibliographic control.

Qualifications
Required:
*  Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution
*  Demonstrated successful supervisory experience
*  Substantial experience in cataloging using the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Library of Congress classification
    and subject headings, MARC21 formats, and automated library systems
*  Demonstrated awareness of national and international trends in bibliographic and authority control, information
    organization, and knowledge management.  Familiarity with established and emerging metadata standards (TEI,
    EAD, Dublin Core, etc.)
*  Demonstrated experience training catalogers in cataloging standards and procedures
*  Ability to excel as a team leader in a dynamic, collaborative, technology-intensive environment
*  Evidence of flexibility and of analytical skills to resolve complex problems
*  Demonstrated ability to work well in a changing environment, to work effectively in a large and diverse organization,
    and to exercise creativity and initiative as a manager
*  Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
*  Ability to meet the criteria for the University of California Associate Librarian or Librarian rank

Preferred:
*  Working knowledge of foreign languages

The Catalog Department

The Catalog Department is responsible for cataloging approximately 30,000 items annually including monographs, serials, AV, music, computer files, electronic resources, and government publications for all subjects and languages.  Including the Department Head, the staff includes 8 librarians, 22 full-time library assistants and a varying number of student assistants.  The Department consists of five sections: Monograph Cataloging, Copy Cataloging, Serials, Catalog Maintenance, and East Asian.  The Department uses OCLC for cataloging and the Innovative Interfaces Inc. INNOPAC system as the Libraries’ OPAC.

The Libraries

The UCI Libraries are in a major period of growth and consist of the Main Library, the Science Library, and the Medical Center Library.  The Main Library primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies.  The Science Library primarily serves the College of Medicine and the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and the Department of Information and Computer Science.  The Medical Center Library serves the UCI Medical Center, located 12 miles from the main campus in the city of Orange.

The UCI Libraries have a staff of 306 FTE and an organizational structure that includes the use of teams in conjunction with departments.  The library collection consists of over 2.2 million volumes and 25,000 current serial titles, a substantial microform collection, and an aggressively expanding electronic resources collection of over 9,000 titles.  The UCI Libraries are a member of the: Association of Research Libraries (ARL), California Digital Library (CDL), Coalition of Networked Information (CNI),  Center for Research Libraries (CRL), Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).

University of California, Irvine

One of ten University of California campuses, the University of California, Irvine, is nestled in 1,500 acres of coastal foothills, five miles from the Pacific Ocean, between San Diego and Los Angeles.  The present enrollment is 21,885 students with a faculty of approximately 1,110.  The current student population numbers 17,865 undergraduates and 4,020 graduate students including 1,095 health sciences students.  Ethnic/minority students represent about 60% of the student body.  Student enrollment is expected to reach 30,000 by 2010 accompanied by a proportional growth in faculty.  The University offers 38 doctoral programs in addition to the M.D.  UCI is ranked nationally in the top universities; several doctoral programs are ranked in the top ten.  UCI is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU).

Librarians at the University of California, Irvine are academic appointees and receive potential career status at the time of their initial appointment.  Librarians are periodically subject to administrative and peer review for merit increases based on the following criteria: 1) professional competence and quality of service within the Library; 2) professional activity outside the Library; 3) university and public service; and 4) research and other creative activity.  They are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, one day per month sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and all other perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel.  The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group life and health insurance plans.  Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of $42,996 - $70,500 (Associate Librarian I - Librarian II).  Applicants who may qualify for the Associate Librarian level are encouraged to apply.
