Here is another solution to the one Marilyn has described. At the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln we too have run out of shelving space in the
main library as well as several of our 9 branches. We have rented storage
space in 2 warehouses a couple of miles from campus. Older materials were
selected for these locations and our III system now lists these items with
their storage location: Storage 1 or Storage 2 with at status code "Ask at
Circ." Patrons request items at the Circ desk and we try for 24 hour
delivery. The storage facilities are not staffed except for staff
retrieving and reshelving materials. So far this is working. If you want
more details, please let me know. We hope to build a storage designed for
library materials at some point in the future.

At SSU, we have an Automated Storage and Retrieval System as part of our
new
library - it is far superior tp off-site storage and considerably cheaper
to
build that another entire building. The vendor is HK Systems located in
Salt
Lake City. Take a look at our webpage - I really think it's the only way
to
go.
