- Subject: RE: Social Security Numbers vs Student ID numbers
Our College uses Banner as our admin system and an ID card system from
General Meters. By law, as of about last July we are NOT PERMITTED to
print an SSN on a College ID card, so when our ID card system was set up,
it was configured to generate its own 9-digit numbers. We don't use the
internal Banner number -- someone at the College had some concerns about
that.
We load the SSN number in as College ID (u) and both the SSN and
ID card numbers in as barcode numbers (b), with the ID card one always
coming FIRST (when there is one) -- this way IT rather than the SSN is
the one that displays on the screen in Millennium. I'm pretty certain that
we do our matching on College ID.
We NEED to keep the SSN as the College still uses it as their key to
locating records in Banner; so, we have to have it in case we need to
check registration there.
Hope this helps.
