We are working on this also. There is no problem
using a different number, or even letters and numbers
in some cases. The Innopac system can be configured
to handle this. One problem is the switchover. If you
load records that match on ssn then when you bring in the
new datatel numbered records they will not match and there will
be dups etc. In order to preserve pin codes etc. its better
to overlay on the existing record. If you can configure your
incoming records to include both the ssn and datatel initially,
they should overlay on the ssn and add both barcode fields. You could
then delete the ssn barcode field.
That may be one solution.

Cherie,
We use Datatel and Innovative also. Our college ID number is the
seven digit Datatel number and it works fine for us except for
when two or more records are entered in Datatel for the same person
resulting in duplicate ID numbers.
We have always used the Datatel ID number, therefore, I don't know
about any of the problems/concerns of switching from SSN to a different
number.
If you have more questions, email me directly.
