Joan, I can answer your first question but not the second one. When I was at
UT Memphis, we would place a heavy paper 'overlay' (which was a strip of
paper about 3" wide over the cover of the ILL item and which had the words
'do not remove' prominently at the top of it) on the item. We used this
overlay to indicate the due date for the item as well as to indicate that it
was an ILL item. We also had a space provided for a barcode number. We had a
series of barcodes which we attached to library date-due cards (remember
those??) and which we re-used. When an ILL item came in to be processed and
subsequently checked-out, we attached one of the barcoded cards to the
overlay with a paper clip, wrote the barcode number on the overlay and sent
it to circ. At circ, we scanned the card to check the item out to a patron.
We kept the barcode card in an 'ILL-card' place at the circ desk. Thus the
item was in the system attached to a patron record. When the item was
returned, we matched the barcoded card to the overlay, scanned the card to
check the item in, and 'unprocessed' the ILL item for return. Since the
checked out item was in the system, overdue notices and all the other
regular circ functions applied to it as well as to regular items. While it
seems like a cumbersome system in the explanation, it actually moves pretty
fast and efficiently in practice. If you have questions, get in touch!

Subject: Millennium InterLibrary Loan
We are a site new to the Millennium InterLibrary Loan module
and have been struggling with it, at best. Hopefully,
someone out there can help us with the following:
1. How do you handle providing a barcode for incoming
ILLs? Do you make up a number or use a single, dedicated
barcode number? Is there a problem using duplicate
numbers? Do you just use the barcode numbers that
catalogers would have put on new books? Where do you place
the barcodes on the lending library's material?
2. What is the specific sequence you follow to enter a
request? How do you integrate the request with OCLC? (The
ILL Librarian cannot find a logical order that works for
her.)
3. Lastly, does anyone have documentation a
new-to-Innovative person can use?
Thanks for the help.
