- Subject: Re: Opening ports in firewall to III
Firewalls can be setup to allow broad access, or very specific access. I
have our firewall configured to only allow in workstations originating
from one of the four III subnets. This does mean that anyone in the
company can get in, but then I trust them. Further, I have the firewall
setup to allow the III people access to only the innopac server, and no
others (we also have mail and web servers that have nothing to
do with III). Opening ports for III does not give others access.
If the campus network folks still have a problem with access to your
server, then pull out the maintenance bills and let the administration
know how much money you are spending on support and that you would like
them to have access to the machine.
Although dial access is available, it's much slower than going over the
network. If you are having trouble with the server, you generally want
it fixed sooner and not later.
