Dear James,
We have 2 sets of 6 Daily Backup Tapes and 2 sets of Full Backup Tapes
(we do a full backup once a week). We store all tapes off site and we
discard tapes after about 9 months. I also clean the tape drive 3 times
a week with cleaning cartridge which costs about $4 and has practically
eliminated error message during backups. With each set of daily and
full backup tapes I include an extra tape to be used, "in case of an
error message during backup." This has come in handy several times as I
have 5 different staff members performing backups. Should any one of
them run into a problem, they know they have a fresh tapes to pop in the
drive. That tape then becomes part of the rotation and I put a new tape
in the pack as the new "backup" backup tape.
Good luck!
