- Subject: Re: Write call number on title page and labeling procedures
We used to pencil in the call number on the t.p. verso, but we stopped that
years ago (before I came to work at this library).
Many of the folks responding speak of printing book labels that have the
title and author on them, along with the call number. I like that idea, but
we don't do that. The only labels that go on the book are the barcode and
the call number. We download our records from OCLC via Passport for Windows
(yes, I know that program will be going away eventually). When we process a
book, we print out an SL6 slip (which has the call number, title, and
author) which we tuck inside the front cover. Then the books go to our
student workers for labeling (we only have one printer set up for this).
The students keep the books stacked in the same order they were on the
cart, so when they cut the labels, they are in the correct sequence. But
the labelers have the SL6 slip to refer to, just to be safe.
Then before the books actually leave the department, someone checks every
book against the Innopac, to catch any errors that may have slipped
through. Errors are infrequent.
