If you can wait a month or two, version 2.10 of OCLC CatME will incorporate the telnet functionality of PFW, and you'll be able to use your PFW macros with only one slight change in code. OCLC has tested CatME (which is a 32-bit program rather than 16-bit, as PFW is) as being XP-compatible, and, since CatME is just as freely available to you as PFW is and since you've already developed working macros, it seems to me that that's the way to go. Just my opinion, of course.
