Folks,

Well, there is still time to provide useful and important ideas to the program that Barbara Vance and I are doing at IUG@ALA on Passwords. And we really, really, hope that you do so, so that we do not find ourselves reenacting Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First" routine or demonstrating the Foxtrot to fill the time!

What follows is a preliminary outline of what we are going to do, and it is as loose as warm jello, which means there is plenty of time to fill it with marshmallows and rasins and other tasty tidbits that will give it character, flavor, and substance!

I know that many of you are especially interested in specific Millennium password combinations that will enable your staff to get started on serials checkin or acquisitions or circulation. I don't think we'll be able to cover all those possibilities during our song & dance, but maybe we could try to address some of those issues in individual meetings after the program. This will require you to BYOPF (bring your own password file!)

Cheers.

Fred
====================================
General topics to be covered at Password Program for IUG@ALA.

Introduction

Expectations (yours, not ours)

Prefatory Caveats

There is NO formula for the current password file that can be applied across all III systems.
Many sites have had local customization of the password file; but this will be changing over time.
The goal is to have one password file available to all users that contains the exact same set of potential authorized functions.
The password file should be reviewed on a regular basis.
In future (or even now), additions to the password file, that is, new functionality that should require a password, must go through the enhancement process file, not the help desk.

In general:

Exclusively Telnet Systems need use only options 1-99.
As soon as institutions begin to convert to Millennium, they should begin using options 100-.
Even institutions that are now All Millennium All The Time MUST continue to use some authorizations in the 1-99 range, e.g., for SysAdmin (password and logins, etc.), Materials Booking, some aspects of Circulation (holds management), etc. The documentation provides other examples. (Provide citations.)
The goal is to create a password file such that All Millennium All The Time will only have to use 100-.
