If you're open to a completely different approach, we run a list of these
periodically, notify our selectors in case they want to replace the items,
then suppress the lost item (and the bib, if it's the last copy and we're
not replacing it).
This way if the item or patron ever come back (and amazingly, sometimes
they do years later) all the info is still there.
