We migrated back in 1995 with non-standard, 11-digit Plessey barcodes. We 
have used 14-digit CodaBar since 1995. We have had to turn off validation 
of barcodes ever since we came up in 1995. We don't like it, of course, but 
we have no option.

We will have the old barcodes on our items for a long time, because to 
re-barcode the tiers of books at the Milwaukee Public Library would be very 
time consuming and problematic. If you can re-barcode your collection, I 
would strongly recommend it. Having barcode validity checking is very 
desirable. It does cause problems not having it.
