Before you can export and import the same records, you need an export
template and a loader which will enable you to overlay the records when you
reload them. For example, most loaders match on the 001 field in the
incoming record. So, your export program has to preserve the 001
field. And you also need to be sure that all the fields in the record
which you care about are being exported or set up overlay protection
schemes to preserve the fields on reimport.
I can't speak to programs which allow you to change data in Marc records.
The Marc record has a structure which depends on byte (character) counts in
each field. If you use a word processor or text processor on a Marc
record, you are likely to mangle it.
