Someone suggested reviewing the archives on this.  That is good advice. 
Cables modem providers for the most part do not require use of a 
proxy.  This is certainly true of @Home, the largest and soon to be 
bankrupt, cable modem provider. The cable modem providers install browsers 
as part of their installation package which are pre-configured to use the 
provider's proxy and can't be changed except by Windows tweaking at the 
registry level.  Uninstalling and reinstalling the browser does no 
good.  However, the user can install the standard version of another 
browser which bypasses the isp's proxy. So, the simplest solution with any 
cable user is to recommend that they install Netscape (if they use the 
isp's version of IE) and IE if they use the isp's Netscape. -- Howard
