boxes. I would be interested to hear from anyone who is offering an
Advanced Search help page with multiple input boxes where patrons can
build up a complex search expression.
I have noticed that on Innovative's demo system the last search does
not appear in the input box when the Modify Search button is clicked.

Mieko,
The original search doesn't appear after a 'modify search' because the webopac is trying to pop it into the "<!--{search}-->" token which doesn't exist on Innovative's testform.
Personally, while I like the multi-line approach, I would be very leary of trying to implement it until III offers it as a fully documented and supported feature. If you look at their html markup, you will see that this form does not function at all without javascript. If you worry about compliance with older browsers, this is not a good option. Until innovative allows us to have multiple versions of the X screen, you could consider making this form completely javascript written with a "noscript" tag to handle a standard one-line form for older browsers. Also, you could have users click on buttons that would tell the javascript on this page whether to write a multi-line or single-line form by passing it a binary token...
HTH,
David
