RE: R2001 Millennium Manual Problem

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]
Does this mean that the "blue screen of death" is actually a Windows error? We are getting this screen while running Millennium Serials without touching the Manual. Once the blue screen appears ... it's all over.

If this screen does represent a Windows error, then my search for a solution will take a new turn.

This is something that I see pop up on my machine every so often. However,
I don't think that I would chalk this problem up to III's Millennium
products, but rather the way that windows in handling the command.
Basically, when you click on the manual button in III's software, it is
shelling out the command to a windows application called START. START is a
command-line application that lets users in MS-DOS open windows applications
from the command prompt, but you can also execute this command from the
start..Run box. Anyway, like I said before, III's software is basically
passing this command: (this works on our system): start
http://oasis.orst.edu/manual/cat
If typed at the command prompt (or run dialog), this command will open the
url in whatever you default webbrowser happens to be. If you are getting a
blue screen of death, or some other type of an error, the problem is
probably more to do with Windows and the applications that it is calling.
(For information on the START command, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q126/4/10.asp)

As I said above, I do find the my computer does crash on occassion (though
not very often), or the command window freezes when using the manual.
However, generally for me, this is cleared up by a clean reboot of the
system (and generally is caused by a forced reboot of the system).

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

It isn't exactly true that they haven't heard of this. My open call on it
is
C508732. I've had the problem on a Dell Optiplex Gx110 running Win98.
Discovered it during the MilCat beta. Hasn't become suddenly fixed in
R2001.
It may be that the call is still associated with the beta process and that's
why
they didn't locate it.

What happens to me after selecting "Manual" is that the java box in the
toolbar
starts flashing. When I select that app (sorry if the terminology is weird,
I'm
a Mac person) I get a dialog box telling me that the program has performed
an
illegal operation and will be terminated. I'm supposed to be able to Quit
from
this and then it wants me to restart my machine, but it always hangs and I
have
to Ctrl+Alt+Del to get rid of it.

We have other Dells on which this works just fine.

I already called Innovative on this, but they said they hadn't heard from
anyone else about the problem, so I am posting to the list.

We just converted to R2001 and are putting the final touches on bringing up
Millennium circulation. We now have two different PCs which consistently
crash in all Millennium modules when the About menu is selected and the
Manual is chosen. One PC (933Mhz Dell, 256mb, 16mb graphics, Windows 98se)
gets two blue screens of death followed by a blank screen and a frozen
machine. The other PC (333 Mhx Dell, 128 mb memory) bypasses the blue
screens and immediately freezes with a blank screen. And on five other PCs
(mostly 550Mhz Dells) everything works fine.
