Moving item records from one bib record to another

I just moved (this is not linking I'm talking about) from one bib record to
another.  It was quite laborious.  I created a duplicate bib record and then
when the linking did not quite work, I create de novo new items records for
the new bib record and then went back and deleted those same item records
from the old bib record.

Is there any other way I could have done this?  If not, I would suggest that
there be a way to do it electronically in III's next release.
