Librarian II / Cataloger
Hayward Public Library

THE POSITION:
Under general direction a Librarian II performs difficult library work involving complex services and tasks for customers of all ages and requiring a thorough grasp of reference sources and search techniques, and a broad familiarity with technical processes and services available to library customers. Work in this classification requires exercise of considerable independence and judgement and includes the training and supervision of other library staff. The current opening requires the ability to catalog a variety of library materials using AACR2, USMARC, LCSH, Dewey 21, OCLC, and the Innovative Interfaces automated library system, INNOPAC. The Library collects materials in nine languages in addition to English. The ability to speak and read other languages (Spanish, Farsi, Vietnamese, or Chinese, etc) would be helpful. A Librarian II works with multicultural/multiracial customers and assists in maintaining an international and multilingual collection. Enthusiasm, innovation, self-motivation, cultural sensitivity, and excellent public relation and interpersonal skills are a must. Candidates must be willing to share ideas, initiate positive changes and participate as a contributing member of the library team. The current opening requires that the employee work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings and possibly weekends (Saturdays and possibly Sundays).

This position involves considerable public contact. Successful applicants will demonstrate an ability to provide extraordinary customer service to library users from diverse cultures. In addition, successful applicants must be able to work in a collaborative work environment with the public and all levels of City staff.
SALARY: Effective Monthly Salary Range: $4,011 ? $4,843*
(Effective October 1, 2001, Monthly Salary Range will be $4,169 - $5,033)
*The effective salary range for this position is $4,011 to $4,843. In addition to base salary, ($3,671 to $4,447), this position receives deferred compensation up to an amount of $1,010 per year deposited to a Deferred Compensation Plan, and 7% of straight time earnings deposited to employee's account with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). At the employee's option, these monies are returned as a lump sum upon separation or as an annuity if eligible for retirement. The City is not a member of Social Security but all employees hired after April 1, 1986 will pay 1.45% of earnings towards medicare coverage. Other benefits partially described on the back of this bulletin include City's share of retirement costs, medical, dental, life insurance, vacation, and 14 holidays.

REQUIREMENTS:
Experience and Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with a Master's Degree in Library/Information Science with three years' experience working as a professional librarian with appropriate experience in cataloging and specialized subject knowledge.

Based on the information provided, a screening panel will select the most qualified candidates. Those best qualified on the basis of this review will be ranked on an eligible list. The eligible list will be submitted to the Library Department for hiring consideration.
