Re: Rapid update to delete a specific note

Hi everyone,
Do you think it might be time to ask for an III enhancement for a search
and replace feature similar to what you can do with any Microsoft product?
I think that this common need for updating a word or phrase in a field
should be an Innopac feature. We should be able to gather our records in a
Boolean. Then use that review file to have Innopac search for the
occurrence of a word/phrase and replace it with a new word/phrase or
remove it. I am just now facing a 6,000 record update where I need to
change just a piece of a vendor title ID# in both order and checkin record
fields. I really could use this feature now since I can't wipe out the
unique numbers and replace the entire note with a generic note. This is a
basic kind of feature that really shouldn't require elaborate macros and
other programs. I will be happy to put forth the enhancement request since
it seems like many of us could benefit from it.

>As I mentioned in a response on 3/30, if you use OCLC and have telnet
access to your local Innovative system via OCLC's Passport for Windows
product, you can do this kind of thing using a macro (a computer program
triggered by a key combination). In essence, the macro functions as an
employee who can type very fast and who can make decisions as to what or
what not to modify. You'll find a couple of such macros in the "Database
Modification" section at <http://www.ahml.lib.il.us/pfw/innopac.html>. If
you choose to use "ModifyBibLines", for example, you (or your computer
staff) will need to write programming code in place of what's currently in
the user-written section toward the end of the macro's source code. The
macro for the full-screen MARC editor ("ModifyBibScreen") requires a bit
more complicated coding than does "ModifyBibLines", but it's possible
nonetheless to accomplish what you want using that macro, too. You need to
create a review file of the bibs you want to change and then use D-U-F
(database update of a review file) to get to the point where you start up
the macro. (Of course, start with a review file of only a couple of
records to be sure things are working the way you want before doing the
full-blown database modification.) If you have further questions (or
problems modifying the code), please contact me privately via email.
