POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Temporary part-time librarians, Department of Technical
Services. A pool of librarians for the fiscal year 2001/02 and 2002/03 will
be established from which future appointments to temporary positions will be
made. Librarians to provide reference services and cataloging services are
needed. Duration and total number of hours of appointments will vary from 2
to 39 hours per week, depending upon Library needs and the availability of
funds.
DUTIES: Reference assignments: Primary duty will be to serve at the
Library's general Reference Desk/Electronic Resources Area. The Reference
Desk provides reference and research assistance in all subject areas to CSUF
students, faculty, and staff, and other library users. Additional duties
may include conducting general library workshops and/or specialized
bibliographic instruction sessions for CSUF classes and other groups. Some
assignments may involve providing reference and instruction assistance at
the Mission Viejo campus library. Other duties as assigned.
Cataloging assignments: Create original cataloging and complex copy
cataloging MARC records for audiovisual materials, serials and other formats
as needed. Coordinate authority control activities including creation and
maintenance of authority records and resolve post-cataloging problems.
Assist with the coordination of current cataloging policies, in accordance
with developing national standards and shifting local needs. Assist with
special projects as needed.
REQUIREMENTS: Master's degree in library and/or information science from
an ALA- accredited institution or equivalent.
For reference assignments: Experience providing professional-level reference
service preferably in an academic library. Demonstrated familiarity with
both print and electronic references sources. Experience with, or recent
training in, the use of electronic information resources including
index/abstract databases, full-text databases, statistical sources, and
relevant Internet resources. Effective oral communication skills. Ability
and willingness to work in a team environment. Ability to interact
effectively in a multi-cultural environment with co-workers, library users,
and the wider community. Availability to work days, weeknights and/or
weekends.
For cataloging assignments: Knowledge of AACR2, LC Classification and
Subject Headings, and USMARC formats. Knowledge of automated library systems
and OCLC. One or more years of professional experience, within the last five
years, cataloging audiovisual materials, serials, or other non-book
resources.
DESIRABLE
QUALIFICATIONS: For reference assignments: Preference will be given
to candidates able to work assigned hours on a regular basis.
For cataloging assignments: Experience in original cataloging of
audio-visual materials, serials and/or musical scores. Experience with
integrated library systems, especially Innovative Interfaces Inc.
SALARY: $22.13 per hour plus any increase which may be approved by the
Legislature and Governor.

THE LIBRARY: The University Library contains a collection of some
2,000,000 items in a variety of formats: 765,000 books; 2,500 currently
received periodical subscriptions; 400,000 documents; 900,000 microforms;
and 100 electronic databases. The Library uses the Innovative Interfaces
integrated library system. The staff includes 20 librarians and 40
paraprofessionals, plus approximately 250 student assistants. The CSU has
been under collective bargaining agreements since 1982.
