It's that time of year again! No, I'm not talking about holiday
shopping or unpacking the snow shovels (for those in the northern
hemisphere -- those in the southern hemisphere are probably thinking
about packing them away). But it is time for nominations for the
2001-2002 IUG Steering Committee!

This year we are electing a vice-chair/chair-elect, a treasurer and two
members at large. I've included below information from our bylaws
about the duties for each position.

Why do you want to do it? I think Fred Gertler, our past-past-chair
put it best:

IUG is a volunteer organization, so the rewards for participating
are all the good and important personal and personal ones; no fame,
no glory, but incredible satisfaction at doing good works for a
  good purpose with good people.

The role of the IUG officers and the steering committee has changed
over the past few years. We have signed a contract with a conference
manager, so many of the details of organizing the conference are
handled by an expert in that field rather than by the chair. We are
also contracting out the conference registration process, so most of
the work of registering attendees are handled by specialized company.

Much of the "gunt work" of putting together the conference is now
handled by people experienced in the area of putting on conferences.
The officers and the steering committee now focus on guiding the users
group and concentrate on putting together the best possible programs --
the things the make us a great users group.

If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone else for these
positions, please contact me directly. If you have any questions about
the duties or responsibilities of any of the positions, don't hesitate
to ask any member of the Steering Committee.
