- Subject: AVS search in update D
III has loaded a patch on our system to "fix" advanced keyword
searching. There is now a new wwwoption that lets you choose how far you
would like to go to make the system avoid returning a search that garners
no hits. I'm pasting in the "documentation" we received with the patch.
It works very nicely! I think you will have to have them load a patch
before you can use the new wwwoption. We have chosen ASSEARCH=1 and if
you would like to see it in action you can go to:

ASSEARCH (Update D & Later)
When searching an Advanced Search index (e.g., 'X', 'Y', or 'Z'), if
the search does not return any results, the Web OPAC begins a series
of target modifications in an attempt to return any potentially
useful results. For example, if one entered the following search:
a:xnqrt t:zwnmk
and no records matched, Web OPAC would modify the target, retrying
each modification, and report as follows (the numbers in square
brackets do not appear in Web OPAC's output):
Your search query has been changed...
Tried: (a:xnqrt t:zwnmk) no records found [0]
Tried: (a:xnqrt and t:zwnmk) no records found [1]
Tried: (a:xnqrt or t:zwnmk) no records found [2]
Tried: (xnqrt or zwnmk) no records found [3]
Tried: xn** no records found [4]
Tried: xa** 77 records found [5]
The modifications applied in each level are:
0 No modification (search tried "as is" in adjacency mode)
1 Change from an adjacency search to an "AND" search
2 Change from an adjacency search to an "OR" search
3 Do an "OR" search, discarding any field limits
4 Search on only the first word, discard any field limits,
and truncate the first two characters
5 Search on only the first word, discard any field limits,
truncate the first two characters, and change the second
character to the letter 'a'
The ASSEARCH option specifies the highest level of modification applied
to a failed search. For example, if ASSEARCH=3, then only the first
three modifications are applied to a failed search, skipping truncation
steps 4 and 5. If ASSEARCH=0, then no target modification is applied
to failed seaches.
By default, if this option does not appear in the WWWOPTIONS file, the Web
OPAC behaves as if it were set to '0' (no target string modification).
NOTE: The ASSEARCH option replaces the
ASTRUNCATE option, which is now
obsolete.
