I don't have an answer to your specific question, but I wonder if you have 
considered using the "in-transit" status.  That way you could check in the 
item from the patron so the fines stop accruing, but the item remains with 
the "in-transit" status linked to the patron record until it arrives at the 
home library.  That way you can still track it as it makes it through the 
system.
