- Subject: RFC: Item Call Numbers
I have submitted the following enhancement request to enhance@xxxxxxxxxx,
and to the IUG Enhancement Process. I am posting it here for comments,
because I am interested in knowing whether there are many other
customers who use item call numbers exclusively, and if they also feel
like second-class citizens when they run into the limitations of a
system that really expects you to be using bib or a combination of bib
and item call numbers.
---Enhancement Request---
We understand that some Innovative customers index call numbers
from the bib record, and that others index call numbers from both
the bib and item records. In our case, all of our call numbers
are indexed from the item record, and this is presumably also true
for other customers (especially other consortia.)
If a customer chooses to index items exclusively from the item
record, we would like that basic set-up decision to be reflected
all through the system. We shouldn't have the option to choose
the call number from the bib record in Create Lists of Records,
or Create Statistical Reports, or anywhere else in the system.
No reports should be based on bib record call numbers, or the
call number of the first item that is attached to the bib record.
We should also have the ability to export call numbers from the
WebCat in brief records.
In short, we want the system to know where our call numbers are,
and to use them in every way that the system can use call numbers.
