Title: RE: Patron types for distance students?

Michael-- Thanks for your speedy reply.  I know this is asking a lot, but could you tell me a little more about how the rules for determining the ptype from your student enrollment is derived?  I realize that most data elements might be unique to your institution, but I'm becoming desperate.

Thanks again.

Peggy
we have a large distance ed component (11,500 students
out of 29,000 roughly) and we use ptypes to
distinguish local, State, National and international
off-campus students in each of
 -undergrads,
 -honours
 -course work post-grads and
 -research post-grads categories.

We have the advantage of daily patron downloads from
the University's student database.

The rules for deriving the ptype from the students
enrollment are complicated because yes, we have
students who take a mixture of on- and off-campus units
during a semester. Some students are also enrolled
simultaneously in two different courses.

We want to distinguish between each of these
groups however so we can target the service.
We give the different levels of student,
as above, different length loan
periods.

We also give differently located students
(local,national, international) different lengths
of time to allow for mailing the books to and fro.

So we have loan rule determiner rules for each
combination of these parameters.

However once the rules are in place and the kinks
ironed out it seems to work ok.

This year we went with a new student system and
it took some months to get the interface programmed
and the rules ironed out. But we hope that is a
once in a decade event.

Michael

I've run across a problem that is probably going to become m
    ore and more
common in the future for our institution, and probably other
    s as well.  We
already have a very active (world-wide) distance education p
    rogram, and have
ptypes set up for students participating in these programs.
     Their
individual patron records also have fields which include the
    ir cohort code,
college, degree, and major.  (In addition, we have an entire
     distance
library department within the main library that serves the i
    nformation needs
    of these students.)

Recently, we've encountered students that are physically loc
    al students, but
they may take one or two distance or on-line classes.  So th
    ey are really
"hybrids".  And this status could change from semester to se
    mester.

Since I'm still ironing out the problems encountered in esta
    blishing a
weekly load of records from our Banner system, I'm not looki
    ng for any new
problems to take on.  However, this looks like it's going to
     quickly become
problematic. (We also have 12 registration periods each year
    , and students
can be simultaneously registered in more than one cycle.)

I'm beginning to think that maybe I should just have generic
     ptypes of
graduate students and undergraduate students.  Maybe a more
    elaborate ptype
    scheme is asking for trouble?

Has anyone else encountered these kind of problems with ptyp
    es and trying to
    establish accurate statistics?

    Thanks.
