For no. 2, you can try "field p <=1970." I think this might work
because numbers are usually indexed before alphabetical terms. I just
tried this on our system and it worked ok UNLESS there are diacritics in the
publishers name. If the diacritic has {232}, a 1971 pub. date will pop up
into the list.
In that case, you could try "p<=1970" AND p does not have { AND p does
not have }
When I did this search, I got some strange results:
Out of 149 records (a very small sample), I got 4 records that had 1971 in
the 260. All of them had the imprint: (Frandfurt a. M.)|bSuhrkamp|c(1971).
There were many others with the same place and pub., but had 1970 dates or
earlier.
I did a subsearch and asked for 260 does not have 1971 and the file was
purer. However, some of these records from the 1920s had no imprint and
showed up in the list and some records that had 1979, c1969 showed up in
the list.
You might do a subfile with p does not have 260. That might sort out the
ones without an imprint or use p >=1. I didn't have enough time to try
that. But if you get that subfile, it should not have ones without a 260
field.
You might try some kind of sorting and see if you can find ones that you
don't want in the file with a later date at the end of the list. In this
case, I think the record with the 1979, c1969 imprint date would show up
twice; once in with the 1969 dates and again later at the end of the file
with dates after 1970.
I think you are going to need to do some sorting and manipulating of various
list files to finally get what you want.
We don't always correct the 008 fields but the 260 date is always corrected
so we rely on that.
I hope I am of some help or perhaps someone else can give you a more direct
way to do this.

Subject: Create lists
I have two questions regarding create lists. I am sure they are very easy
to answer, but I just can't figure the answers out right now.
1. Is it possible to create a list of items based on the absence of a
certain tag. For example, I wanted a list of all the serials that did not
have a 222 tag in their record. If this is possible, how do I do it?
2. I was sure I have done this one before, but haven't been able to figure
it out either. I want to create a list of items that were published before
a certain date. It is difficult to do this based on the publisher
information and/or the 260 tag because it isn't always just a date
(sometimes there is a c1970 instead of a 1970). What other field or way can
I do this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
