- Subject: Re: Display of Serials Call #
Dear Emily
At the Port Elizabeth Technikon Library in Port Elizabeth, South Africa we shelve our titles according to a call number plus the first three letters of the alphbet of the title. This has always worked for us and never created any problems.
For example we assign the broad classification of 330 to our FINANCIAL MAIL. The sticker on our journal reads 330 FIN and it is then shelved alphabtically with the 330s.
Our National Geogrphic is at 910 NAT.
On the opac that is the call number it will give the students and showing the location to be periodicals.
It really does work.
Let us know what system you eventually opt for.

We are a new III library and are trying to sort out some things so, excuse
me if I babble.
We shelve our serials by title. However, we still have the call number in
the 050 or 090 fields. In our previous system this did not create a
problem. With III it is displaying a call number in the OPAC on the "Latest
Received" page. (We were able to remove it from the regular display.) This
is misleading, since we do not shelve our serials by call number. The only
solution we are aware of is to delete the call number from the bib record.
I and several others in the library are leary to do this for several
reasons.
How have those of you that shelve by title resolved this problem. And if
you do delete the call number from the bib record, what is the
justification, or vice versa?
Thanks.
