CORRECTED POSITION VACANCY
ASSISTANT MUSIC LIBRARIAN
The Otto G. Richter Library and the Albert Pick Music Library of the
University of Miami invite applications and nominations for the position of
Assistant Music Librarian.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Music Librarian helps the Music Librarian with the daily
operations of the Albert Pick Music Library. Specific responsibilities
include:
* performing original cataloging of scores and recordings, and other
music materials;
* managing the cataloging and database maintenance for the Music
Library;
* overseeing the outsourcing of binding for the Music Library;
* developing, recommending, and implementing policies and procedures
necessary for cataloging materials for the collection;
* maintaining manuals and collecting and reporting relevant
statistics;
* developing and maintaining the Music Library Website;
* assisting the Music Librarian with library instruction, collection
development, and reference assistance for the School of Music;
* participating in library and university committees, including
serving on the Cataloging Policy Board, and in professional activities; and
* performing other duties and completing special projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required qualifications for the position are:
* ALA-accredited MLS degree or equivalent;
* bachelor's degree with a major in music or equivalent;
* demonstrated knowledge of music cataloging using AACR2, LC
classification and subject headings, and the MARC formats in an automated
cataloging system;
* demonstrated proficiency with microcomputer applications, including
experience with electronic information resources;
* basic bibliographic knowledge of foreign languages;
* ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse population;
* ability to work well both independently and collaboratively
maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, and
staff in a complex and rapidly changing environment;
* excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; and
* evidence of continued professional development, involvement, and
contribution.
FACULTY RANK
Twelve-month appointment at Assistant Professor rank or Librarian Assistant
Professor rank; tenure-track or non-tenure options available.
SALARY & BENEFITS
Salary commensurate with qualifications; minimum $30,000 annually.
Comprehensive benefits package including: paid pension plan; partially paid

insurance available; tuition remission; 13 paid holidays; and 22 days annual
vacation.

INSTITUTIONAL ENVIRONMENT
One of the oldest universities in South Florida, the University of Miami is
a private Research I university with a student population of approximately
8,400 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate and professional students. One of
only 26 private research universities to operate both a law and medical
school, UM is located near one the nation's most dynamic and diverse
metropolises. Comprised of 14 schools and colleges, UM offers a wide
selection of academic disciplines ranging from architecture and
international studies to law and medicine. UM has established an
international presence in medicine, engineering, law, the marine sciences,
international studies, business, communications, and other disciplines.
Opened in 1926, the University will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2001.
The Otto G. Richter Library serves as the main library for the university
and has a collection of more than 2 million volumes and is a depository for
federal, state, and international government documents. The Richter Library
has a materials budget of approximately $4 million, a staff of 34 librarians
and 85 support staff, and is a member of ARL, ASERL, OCLC, and SOLINET.
Through IBISWEB, its Innovative Interfaces web-based catalog, the library
provides access to more than 200 databases and 2,000 plus electronic
journals. The Richter Library is currently in the midst of a $16 million
building renovation project, which is scheduled for completion in early

Located in suburban Coral Gables in the center of the 260-acre lush and
tropical main campus, the School of Music on the Coral Gables campus at the
University of Miami has an enrollment of 722 music majors, including 220
graduate students and 502 undergraduates. Comprehensive and innovative
programs leading to the B.M., M.M., D.M.A., and Ph.D. degrees are offered by
60 full-time faculty and 30 adjunct faculty.
The Pick Music Library, located in the School, houses a collection including
64,000 scores and 37,000 recordings, with strong holdings in contemporary
music and jazz. It also maintains the Larry Taylor-Billy Matthews Musical
Theater Archive, an extensive collection of recordings and scores focusing
on American musical theater and popular music. The staff consists of two
professional librarians, four full-time library assistants, and student
