We're still in the planning stage for Advanced Search - trying to foresee any problems before implementation - so your comments about "Search as Word" concerned me. I went out to a few libraries that I knew had AS to experiment a bit and certainly found it to be a problem when there were hits on the redirected phrase search. One library (University of Washington) gave interesting results when there were no hits on a "Search as Word" redirect - it would try an "and" search, and then an "or" search if there were still no hits. It also did this from a direct AS search. All the other libraries I tried would simply give a "No Results" message in both cases. Now if we could only get that "and" functionality built into a "Search as Words" search - or perhaps instead of performing the search, sending the searcher to the AS page as a "Modify Search" would. Thanks for the heads-up.

Just FYI -- I sent this message off to Innovative's Enhance e-mail address
and to the IUG functional expert, but I think others installing the new AVS
Keyword index may want to be aware of this. We put a message on our
'srchhelp' screen that warns users about the change from implied 'and' to
adjacency, (<http://uconl.law.uconn.edu/search/X>) but it would be good if
the system can do this for us when appropriate (as in this case).

Subject: "Repeat as Word Search" interaction with AVS Keyword

The behavior of "Repeat as Word Search" differs between the old keyword
interface and the new AVS Keyword interface because of the change from the
implied "and" to Adjacency as the default boolean operator of the AVS
Keyword index. If one does a title search for "john smith" and then
selects "Repeat as Word Search", the old keyword index will always return
more hits than the AVS Keyword index. If the default operator for AVS
Keyword is to remain adjacency, the "Repeat as Word Search" button must
automatically construct the search string "john and smith" when searching
the AVS Keyword index.
