POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT 
Catalog Librarian (Univ. of Georgia Law Library)

	Please feel free to forward this announcement to individuals 
who may be interested, or to other appropriate library job or 
discussion lists.  We hope to interview in October with a start date in 
January 2001.  The application deadline is Wednesday, September 27.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Alexander Campbell King Law Library

POSITION: Catalog Librarian

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-  Planning and overseeing the tasks and workflow for the Cataloging 
Department.

-  Collaborating with other Librarians and other Library Departments to 
coordinate workflow and services. 

-  Supervising and training Cataloging Department personnel (currently 
3.5 FTE - 1 Assistant Catalog Librarian, 2 full-time Library 
Assistants, and 1 part-time Library Assistant).

-  Original cataloging and classification in all formats on OCLC.  
Complex copy-cataloging for bibliographically difficult materials.  
Planning and implementing methods for providing access to electronic 
resources, including monitoring metadata standards and services.

- Managing authority control processes.  Updating records for title and 
classification changes.  Retrospective conversion of titles not found in
the catalog.  Maintaining and improving the quality of the records in 
the catalog to ensure accurate information is being displayed to the 
public. 

-  Serving as the primary Library liaison with INNOVATIVE Interfaces, 
Inc.  Keeping aware of developments and features available with the 
INNOVATIVE software.  Communicating developments and changes in the 
system to the Library staff and providing training when appropriate.  
Coordinating the maintenance of the database with others at the 
Library.  Administering and monitoring the system functions of the 
database.  Generating and keeping statistics from the database.

-  Participating in Library Meetings and Committees.  Keeping current 
with relevant developments in your area of specialization.  Being 
professionally active through library associations, professional 
workshops and meetings at the local, state, regional, and/or national 
level.

-  Providing evening and weekend reference service in rotation with 
eight other Librarians.

-  Other duties as assigned.

-  Reports to the Director of the Law Library.


QUALIFICATIONS:

	Candidates must possess: a cooperative, service-minded 
attitude; effective interpersonal and communication skills; initiative 
and creativity; enthusiasm for contributing to a collaborative 
Technical Services and Library environment; interest in effecting 
change in an automated environment; awareness of current developments 
in cataloging; understanding of broad library issues; a commitment to 
professional growth.
	Required: MLS from ALA accredited library school; relevant 
experience in library; working knowledge of cataloging tools and 
formats (e.g. AACR2, LC Classification, LCSH, LCRIs, CONSER, OCLC, 
MARC); experience with authority control; experience with automated 
library systems, preferably Innovative Interfaces or Endeavor; basic 
knowledge of metadata standards (e.g. Dublin Core) and mark-up 
languages (e.g. HTML, XML); bibliographic knowledge of at least one 
language in addition to English. 
	Desirable: familiarity with legal materials; experience in an 
academic law library; demonstrated experience with the Innovative 
Interfaces or Endeavor integrated library system; project management 
experience; supervisory and leadership experience.


BENEFITS:

	Standard benefits package includes life, health, and disability 
insurance; mandatory participation in the state or optional retirement 
system (such as TIAA/CREF); 21 days annual leave; and 12 paid holidays. 
Salary minimum: $34,000.  Adjustments may be made commensurate with 
qualifications and experience.

ABOUT THE LAW LIBRARY:

	The University of Georgia is located in Athens, a small city 
about 60 miles east of Atlanta.  The Alexander Campbell King Law 
Library has a rich, established collection numbering more than 460,000 
volumes and volume equivalents and strives to be state-of-the-art in 
use of library and information technology.  The staff consists of ten 
Librarians, four Computing Services Specialists, and 12 classified 
personnel who serve a student body of approximately 650 JD and LLM 
students and a law faculty of approximately 40 members.  The Law 
Library oversees all computing services of the Law School, in addition 
to delivering traditional library services.  More information about the
