TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN
HARTWICK COLLEGE, ONEONTA, NEW YORK

The Stevens-German Library at Hartwick college, a nationally ranked,
selective liberal arts and science institution, seeks applications for a
Technical Services Librarian.  Candidates must have an understanding of the
principles and practices of cataloging, and interest in collection
development, demonstrated skill in using technology and enthusiasm for
providing access to a diverse collection of paper, electronic, and media
resources.

This is a 12-month appointment that reports to the Head of Technical
Services.  Benefits include TIAA-CREF, 25 days annual leave and a selection
from a variety of health insurance programs.  The entry-level position is
classified as exempt level 5 and offers a starting salary from $27,920.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 	 Performs original and complex copy cataloging in a
variety of formats and in all subject areas; maintains authority control of
subjects and series; provides support for the library's Innovative
Interfaces system; investigates new opportunities for access to library
collections; helps develop and evaluate procedures; participates in
cross-department teams for collection development, creating and updating
library Web pages, and the uses of new technologies in library service;
faculty workshops; supervises paraprofessionals and students.

QUALIFICATIONS;  An MLS from an ALA-accredited program; knowledge of AACR2;
MARC format, LCSH and   LC classification; strong communication and
problem-solving skills.  Desired experience with an integrated library
system and OCLC in an academic library; knowledge of text markup languages
and Web page design; some experience cataloging non-print  materials,
especially electronic formats, is helpful.

The Steven-German Library houses a collection of about 290,000 volumes and
provides access to 5,000 print and electronic journals, plus many electronic
resources such as Lexis-Nexis, FirstSearch, JSTOR, and ProQuest.  The
library is known for its American Indian collection, archives, and seminary
collection dating from 1797.

Currently the staff includes 10 professionals and 12 staff members.
Hartwick is an independent, private liberal arts college, educating
approximately 1,400 students.  It is located in the foothills of the
Catskill mountains an hour west of Albany.
