- Subject: Re: Millennium Serials Directory - revised
Thank you, Arlene.
To answer your question, response was mixed but most were not actively using Millennium as of their response date. The majority of respondents were in various stages of testing. My first inclination was to include this information in the directory, but with the large number of responses and the fact that this detail could go out of date quickly, I decided against including it in the listing. For those who are curious, UCSD is still testing.
A major stumbling block for us has been the requirement for the bindery module to utilize a system printer rather than a local printer. We are a large system with six bindery workstations distributed throughout our branches. For us to implement MilSer under that requirement would require a significant outlay for additional system ports and printers, if indeed that is even technically feasible. We are still awaiting an answer from Innovative on the question.
We have further problems with the printing functionality for the check-in workstations. Our present configuration is two Okidata Microline 320's with A/B switches, one printer set up with a tractor feed for labelling and the other for printing records, email, etc. We have been unable to print anything but serials labels with the Okidatas. Thus far we have only been able to print test records from Hewlett Packard Deskjets. If we have to replace all of our tandem Okidatas with Deskjets, that's another significant outlay, not to mention the increased support costs for paper and cartridges.
In it's present state it seems to us that Millennium Serials is best suited for small operations with centralized processing units with limited numbers of workstations. If anyone has a different perspective, comments or similar or differing observations on any of the problems I've cited, please share them with the listserv.

Thanks for this information, Dave. This is a long list, and I'm wondering
how many are actually using Millennium Serials successfully for daily
serials tasks. I'm still experimenting with test records, trying to make
it behave consistently, and retain all features of the text-based system
before I take the plunge to use it for "real" daily reoutines. Now I think
I'm going to hold out for Release C to see if that helps. I'm trying to
train staff to use it, but it's difficult to convince them that it is a
better module because there are so many unpredictable and unexplainable
things that happen.
I'd like to hear from those who have begun using it.

I want to thank all those who responded to this poll for your patience and
your willingness to participate. I hope you will find this contact
information a useful tool as you investigate, test and implement Millennium
Serials.
