- Subject: Tables of Contents users?
Anne,
Colorado State University Libraries (CSUL) subscribed to
Blackwell's Books Service's Tables of Contents (TOC) service in
June 2000 and has sent their MARC bibliographic records of titles
published since 1992. CSUL will send all the newly cataloged
records for TOC enrichment on a quarterly basis. CSUL opted for
the addition of 970 fields for TOC enrichment rather than the
enrichment or additon of the 550 Contents note field.
We are very satisfied with the product and the service.
The matching is done on either the ISBN or the LCCN numbers, as
you may have gathered from the brochure.
We have implemented AVS, and have indexed the chapter titles in
both the TITLE and WORD indexes and the authors in the
AUTHOR index. Non-distinctive titles such as acknowledgements,
preface, list of contributors, etc., even though are not indexed, are
displayed. TOC data is displayed immediately after holdings
information in our WEB online catalog. Since we have
implemented AVS, searching and retrieving these titles and
authors have been very fast.
We have not had the time to do some user studies as we only
started in June, but are planning to do.
The turnover time has been very fast. We send our quarterly
bibliographic records to a vendor for Authority control. Blackwell
picks the processed files and processes them for TOC and we
reload them only once. Their statistically produced reports are very
useful for us also. They indicate how many titles were enriched for
each imprints and the total titles enriched. When you load your
records into your system, you can also review the tag counts
which tells you how many 970s were added.
To date, titles were enriched in the humanities, social sciences
and the sciences. We are keeping statistics and percentages of
general LC call numbers that have been enriched.
For an example of a title enriched with TOC information, access
CSUL's online catalog (http://manta.library.colostate.edu/sage/)
and search for the following title: achieving diversity.
Let me know if you need more information. I would be glad to
share our specifications with you also.
Nora

Our library is considering purchase of Tables of Contents, but we
have a lot
of questions about how it all works and how much it actually costs
on an
ongoing basis. I have the product catalog so have read the
description of
the product and basically know what it does. But could some kind
soul(s)
explain to me how it works for them? We're interested in knowing:
- how the ToC info actually matches up with the bib records
- how indexing works
- what types of titles are included (we have law, theology, medical,
and
general libraries in our system - would there be something for
everyone?)
- what are the ongoing costs
- what do your users think about it
- anything else you think I should know but forgot to ask
Thanks mucho :)
Anne
