While we are on the subject of URLs in records other than bibliographic
records, I understand that with Millennium Serials it will be possible to
insert an 856 into a check-in box (or check-in line) in order to provide a
direct link to a particular serial issue. I am having trouble understanding
when (or perhaps why) this might be desirable.

Some thoughts I have on why this would not be desirable:

Public display: surely this will simply clutter up the screen with a lot
of useless links when the resource is easily available via one link to
a list of issues, or the journal homepage, or whatever. _If_ the link is
made directly from the designator, rather than an inserted URL or note
field, this might not be a problem. (Does anyone know if this is the
case?)

Maintenance: We do not check-in web journals, so perhaps that is why
the maintenance issue looms large in my mind. Even if you do check-in
electronic journals though, is it worth taking the extra time to insert a
URL each time? Again, the link to the journal takes you right where you
need to be and adding this step to the checkin process seems redundant and
time-consuming.

I would be very interested in hearing what others think about these and
other issues related to inserting a link for each, individual journal
issue.

Thank you!

Mary
