- Subject: 856 in Item Records
We have this set up on our training system while we work out how we want
to use this. If you just want to see how a link looks displayed at the
item level, here's one:
http://training.noblenet.org/search/t?bedside+dickens
Please note that this is not a good example of anything-- we're just
playing around at this point. In terms of format, I think it's hard to
tell which item the link is associated with, but I haven't done much to
see if this is configurable or really a problem or not.
We'd be interested in hearing how other people think they might use
this. We're a consortium, and one thought we have is to use links in
item records rather than bib records for electronic products that are
individually licensed by one or more individual libraries. That way,
Salem State College could have a link for their students, and Merrimack
College could have a link for theirs, and libraries that didn't own this
wouldn't have an item or a link. The link might not go directly to the
resource, but to a local file that provides the actual link and/or form
for entering ID, and gives a little information on the product and
explains access restrictions (campus only, students only, etc.) and
tells people where to go for help, a library card, etc.
Another thing we're thinking of is using these links to connect to files
with more information on policy restrictions, etc., for certain classes
of material or individual items. Or maybe for gift items, we could add
an 856 link to the item record with |z saying "Memorial Gift: Professor
Plum" and when you click on the link, you get an image of the Professor
Plum Memorial Fund Bookplate, or perhaps a link to the Professor Plum
Memorial Fund website. We do have libraries that have gift notes and
other special item notes (autographed copies, etc.) that they wish they
could display to the public.
