Dear Dianne,

Ours is a small academic library that went from paper to computer. We only have
800 titles. I tried putting the paper cards in one at a time but it was too time
intensive and current information was not being entered into the computer as the
magazines were received. We did not have extra help assigned for this project and
we use student labor which changes from day to day. What I eventually did was
take on the process of checkin for all titles for four months and create cards
with each title received using both the title and the card. This was time
intensive for me but I felt more secure in the information that was entered. I
only put in the current information to go forward at that time. After four
months, I put the process of checkin back into the hands of the students with a
set of procedures. For titles that did not get entered in that time frame, the
students laid aside for me to enter as they came in. Then I took on entering the
older information from the paper cards into the records as needed.

Checkin cards take from one to three minutes to create depending on the
information entered. You can use the default that is assigned from Innopac or you
can set up your own parameters for a specific type of card.

With 6,500 titles this process might not be feasible but it is one way of doing
it. Hope this helps.
