From what I know based on experience at two Innovative libraries, very few
libraries really use the order type i.  it COULD be used if you decide to
place what amounts to a firm order on a particular volume of a standing
order (say, a 2nd copy of volume 32, for example, because it is heavily
used) but you could just place that as a firm order because it will happen
so rarely that the statistics you get will just be another thing to deal
with.  The system doesn't do anything special with the order type; it is
just for statistical purposes.
