Houston Area Library Automated Network (HALAN)
Administration Division
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Acts as the Assistant Database Administrator for the library's online integrated
library system and for the Houston Area Library Automated Network (HALAN). Responsible for the
importing and exporting of data into the HALAN database. Acts as the primary resource person in
the maintenance of and the troubleshooting for the serials and acquisitions subsystems. Trains
users in all functions of the library software, online databases and the Internet. Assists the
Database Administrator with the users' software problems and enhancement requests related to
system functionality. Updates parameters as requested and regularly runs database maintenance
programs. Reports to the HALAN Database Administrator. Requires travel via auto to HALAN
member libraries and its branches. Requires some evenings and weekends.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must be able to
use a computer to input/access information. Position requires stooping, bending, and lifting up
to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) years of professional library experience is required including one (1) year
of management experience.
PREFERENCES
Knowledge of one or more integrated library systems. Experience in a serials and/or
acquisitions department is strongly desired. Good organizational skills, including developing
and documenting procedures and planning ability is necessary. Knowledge of the Internet and
familiarity with various computer application software is preferred. Excellent computer skills
are essential.
SALARY INFORMATION
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications
as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. The minimum to midpoint of
this salary range is:
$40,300 - $46,852 annually plus comprehensive Benefits package.
