We load our patron records from a file of records from the registrar's
office, which are manipulated by campus programmers to match data with
patron record fields. (I'll admit that I haven't paid much attention to
this whole preliminary process, since it was constructed before I took this
job last April and seems to work OK.) Then I import the file into our system
and load via FTS.
But if we wanted to include two patron barcodes, as you suggest, I'm
assuming that our campus programmers could do the same thing as the card
vendor. I've forwarded your message to our ID administrator, and we'll put
our heads together.
At any rate, I really appreciate your suggestion and the time you took to
send it along. This list and the people who help each other out are golden.
Thanks so much.

Presuming for a moment that you load your patron records into your system
from the one-card database, you could ask them to write an extract that
includes two patron barcodes: one with the check digit (to match when the
barcode is scanned) and one without (to match when the patron enters the
At my former employer, our patron extracts included both the barcode field
and the "Student ID number" field (a.k.a. SSN) because there were _no_
printed numbers for the barcode on the ID card.
