Vol./pt. information in item records

For the volume field in an item record, we have been input captions in subfield |d (i.e. |d v. or |d no.) and enumeration and chronology in subfield |e (i.e. |e 2 or |e 1999).  We are doing this in the hope that someday when migrating to a system which supports the MARC Format for Holdings Data we may easily convert those subfields into MFHD fields.

I wonder if any of you are doing something similar or just simply input the caption and enumeration or chronology in one string in the volume field.  I would also like to hear your pros and cons on either way.
