Joyce,

We just received this feature and are working out the legal and display
issues right now.  If you link Patron A to Patron B, the Circulation staff
has the option to view the fines, checkouts, holds and a brief patron
record.  Patrons cannot see linked patrons when they view their own records.

You have control which fixed and variable length fields display in the
"Summary of Attached Records" (as illustrated below.) Once you select a
patron from the list, you will see their name, address, phone, barcode and
fixed fields, but not any of the other variable length fields such as notes
or messages.

We are working on a method to display the notes that we use that explicitly
state what level of access is granted between which patrons.  We could
easily have a situation where two parents have access to their children's
records, but who do not have access to each others records.  Once we link
mom and dad to the kids, mom and dad are also linked.  That's the way it
works, so the notes will be very important to alert the circulation staff on
which names they can give out information as well as what kind of
information.

We were disappointed to discover that it's a "look only" option, we cannot
pay fines or renew materials on the linked records.  I'm drafting the
enhancement request today.  Despite that, we're happy with this.  It will
eliminate a lot of paper and frustration for the staff.

Do any of you use family records in your patron database?  We are thinking
about using this link hoping that if we renew one person in the family it
will renew the others also-  does it work this way? How linked are the
records?  Have you had a problem with confidentiality?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. (I do understand that we have to have
an index available for this information to reside in- we do have that).
