Our system is going to be turning on automatic renewals after our upgrade in January. Looking around through the manual I see that in the loan rule tables there is a max number of renewals and a max number of autorenwals. So my question is if both of those rules were set to 2 could an item be renewed 4 times all together? The patron renewing the item twice and then it being auto renewed twice after that? If we only wanted an item to ever be renewed two times would we be better off setting max renewals to 0 and auto renewals to 2?

so just making sure I am 100% understanding this. If both are set to 2 and the patron already renewed the item twice, then there would be NO auto renewal after that? Since the 2 possible renewals were already used up by the patron.

No, it is not cumulative, but concurrent. The way I interpret it, if you
wanted a maximum of four renewals, but only 2 autorenewals, then you
would put 4 in the total renewals and 2 in the autorenewals table.
Otherwise, if you want only 2 renewals total and both to be auto, then
you put 2 in both the total renewals and the autorenewals. We put the
same number in both spots in our loan rules.
