Hi all,

A few notes about where Idea Lab stands currently:

The new Analytics product is under development now, and will incorporate winning ideas from our first challenge. We expect Innovative to make a more detailed announcement soon.

Members of the IUG Steering Committee have proposed to Innovative that we use Idea Lab to "clear the decks" of existing Polaris and Sierra/Millennium enhancement requests on all topics/modules. This would be very different from the way normal Idea Lab challenges will go, as no specific development resources have been committed by Innovative. There would be one challenge for Polaris, and one for Sierra/Millennium. All IUG members would be encouraged to submit enhancement requests that are still outstanding from any of the older processes, or anything current. This would give the community a way to voice the issues that we see as top priorities. It would also allow any of the older enhancement requests that are no longer important to the community to recede into the background.

Most Idea Lab Challenges going forward will be focused around development that III can commit resources to in advance. We feel that our "clear the decks" proposal will be a good way to answer the most urgent question we keep hearing from the community, "What will be done about old enhancements," while also helping complete the transition from older systems into Idea Lab.

Please let us know if you have questions or concerns. We will notify the community again when we have more information about both the previous Idea Lab Challenge and the proposed new ones.

On behalf of the IUG Steering Committee,
Kathie Brown

Thanks Joe! I love the "clear the decks" idea. It would be helpful to move some outstanding issues forward, then start using Idea Lab as it was intended.

"Most Idea Lab Challenges going forward will be focused around development that III can commit resources to in advance."

Keeping in mind that I'm a pessimist by nature, when I hear "development," I immediately assume III will be charging for these new features (that their customers came up with). For example, if you want decent/expected reporting, you have to pay extra for Decision Center. :(

Hi,

I understand what you're saying, Alison. I want to clarify that what I meant by development was writing or improving software. I'm harping on the "development" piece of this because I'm hoping that it's a positive thing that III is asking questions and putting resources in place to work on the answers that we give them. The old enhancements process got us a list of the most popular items among customers, but I didn't get the sense that III was really changing what they were working on to accomplish those enhancements. It costs nothing for someone to look at a list and say "we'll try to get to some of these," but there's a dollars and cents cost to "the programmers working on this area are going to take their direction from winning ideas in this challenge." I'm hoping that putting money into the process is an indication that III is serious about responding to customers' needs.

I have no doubt that some challenges will be directed towards "what new products III can build and market." I'm hopeful that we can balance those with some of these ideas getting built into products that we are already paying for.

This isn't a very satisfying answer - I'm not promising anything here, just talking about where I hope this work is going. But it's good to have these conversations in the community. We need to keep talking about it.

Take care,
Joe M.

Joe,

I also like the "Clear the Decks" idea. Where can we access the enhancements requests now? It might be helpful for those who submitted requests to see whether these should be closed out or kept.

Thanks,

Barbara

Hi Barbara! Thanks for your enthusiasm! The old enhancements database is still available on the IUG website - you do have to be logged in to see it. It's under Enhancements > Search and Like/Dislike Enhancement requests. It is really showing its age and can be cranky about loading search results. This is one reason we do need to "clear the decks" for sure. When I searched for "palm" as a keyword I did find one from your library related to circulation financial functions.

Hi All,
In this transition period I submitted an enhancement request via the Supportal and was told this was not possible any more. Fair enough but it would be better if Innovative announced to all of us that this was the case. That way a clear consistent message might be delivered to the community.
Thanks,
Bruce Eames.

As a Polaris user, we've continued to ask that support tickets be marked as enhancement requests when needed. Even if the users group doesn't use them any longer, we'd still probably want them marked that way so we can occasionally go back and determine which issues we might want to take on as accelerated development projects.

It is also helpful for us to have support tickets marked as enhancements for when we forget that we already asked if the system could do something before.

Not against a clearing the decks challenge, but I also don't anticipate that we'll stop using that status with our supportal tickets anytime soon.

Interesting Wes!
And the obvious question arising from that is can Millennium/Sierra users have this option too?
Bruce.
